The Ministry of the Environment is currently asking for public comment on the Environmental Registry on its proposal for making the Ministry of Education subject to public consultation provisions in Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR). The comment period ends April 25, 2011. For your comment to be considered, click here to go to the Environmental Registry page and click “Submit comment.”
In past Annual Reports, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario has called for the Ministry of Education to be prescribed under the EBR:
Prescribing Education: Crucial to Future Sustainability (2006)
Prescribing the Ministry of Education under the EBR (2001)

I believe the Public School Boards should be subject to the EBR. At the moment school boards are shutting down schools that are still viable and forcing children to bus to other large schools. In a time when we should be decreasing the use of buses, the school boards are increasing the use. One high school in the Simcoe County School Board District is up for closure due to the fact that an environmentally friendly boiler is needing to be either repaired or replaced. There are many who have testified that this type of system is the most environmentally friendly and financially responsible of all systems but the School Board will not investigate or allow us to get quotes etc.
